Fuelled by an old feud over money, three brothers of a family were hacked allegedly by activists of Jubo League.
The incident took place Thursday night in the capital’s Shahbagh in front of a tea stall near Aziz Super Market.
One of the brothers, Md Gias Uddin Raju, 33, succumbed to his injuries in a city hospital yesterday afternoon.
Gias’ younger brother Adnan Abedin Babu, 30, and elder brother Jainal Abedin had also sustained injuries during the incident and Adnan is currently undergoing treatment at a city hospital.
Relatives of the victims alleged that ward 57 Jubo League President Saiful Islam Akter and his followers had hacked the brothers.
According to Habil Hossain, inspector (investigation) of Shahbagh police station, the incident took place as a result of an old feud over money.
Describing the incident, Jainal told the Dhaka Tribune: “Gias had lent Tk35,000 to Rubel who is a follower of Saiful. On Thursday morning, Gias asked Rubel to return the money as he needed it for his wife’s treatment. Rubel denied to pay him back which created a heated argument between them,” he said.
“They waited for my brothers and launched the attack,” he claimed.
Jainal said the attackers hacked Gias on his head and back and shot Adnan on his back. After hearing the news, he went to the spot and was also beaten by the attackers, he added.
“Later, Gias and Adnan were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital but relatives shifted them to a private hospital at Hatirpool fearing further attacks,” he claimed.
When asked, Inspector Habil said: “Nobody came to the police station to lodge a case in this connection yet but we are looking into the matter.”
