A 14-year-old girl allegedly killed herself on Wednesday night in South Kakchira village under Bamna upazila in Barguna.
Primary investigation revealed that the victim, Bashanti, had swallowed poisonous tablets.
Sub-inspector Jahirul Islam of Bamna police station said Bashanti, a seventh-grader at Kakchira Secondary School, was romantically involved with Shyamol, resident of North Gudihata village. Bashanti’s parents did not accept the relationship and refused to marry her off to Shyamol.
Locals said Bashanti sneaked out of home in the middle of the night to see Shyamol; after returning home, she committed suicide.
Police said the victim’s parents refused to give any information regarding their daughter’s death.
This reporter could not reach her parents on the phone, despite several attempts.
Jahirul Islam said a case of unnatural death had been filed with the police station and the body had been sent to Barguna morgue for a post-mortem.
“We will know the true reason of death after the post-mortem,” he added.
