1.5kg gold seized at Kamalapur Railway Station

Update : 26 Jul 2014, 03:38 PM

Police have seized smuggled gold weighing to over 1.5kg at the capital's Kamalapur Railway Satation on Saturday evening.

Police also detained one Ibrahim Hossain, who was suspected to be arrived at Dhaka with the smuggled gold from Chittagong.

Inspector Abdul Majid Khan, officer-in-charge of Kamalapur General Railway Police (GRP), said they arrested Ibrahim for his suspected movement immediate after his arrival at Dhaka by the Suborno Express.

“By searching his body, the gold bars worth around Tk60 lakh were found hiding in his body”, the OC said.

Earlier on July 16, a total of 50 gold bars weighing to six kg were seized in two separate moves and three persons were arrested in connection with the seizure incidents.

Officials at the GRP said  the gold bars were smuggled into the country through the Chittagong Airport by some of the members of a ring used to smuggling of gold and later the smuggled gold bars were being carried by the detained persons for handing them over to the other members of the ring.

Since the neighbouring India has imposed some restrictions in the import of gold, the incidents of smuggling of gold into Bangladesh have turned frequent as smugglers have become arrogant in the use of the airports in Bangladesh as their alternative ways of smuggling of gold.
