Family of shopkeepers attacked, Tk5 lakh looted

Update : 21 Jul 2014, 07:16 PM

Unidentified assailants attacked a family who run two stationary shops in the Notunbazar area of the capital yesterday, leaving two members critically injured and stealing Tk5 lakh from the store. The victims say it was an act of revenge.

Four family members, including a 60-year old woman, were injured and Tk5 lakh was stolen when the assailants, angered after being refused let them buy goods on credit, returned to the store with accomplices and looted and attacked the shopkeepers.

The injured persons are Somir Chandra Mandal, 32, Sajal Chandra Mandal, 25, Rupa Rani, 30 and Maya Rani Sneha, 60.

Somir and Sajal, who are brothers, run Maa General Store and Shubho General Store.

Maya Rani said: “Two customers came to the store around 2pm and selected some goods. When they were asked to pay, they refused and told us to write the purchase down in the due book. My sons said they needed money to do some shopping before Eid, but the customers still refused to pay. My sons, Somir and Sajal, later snatched away the items the shoppers had intended to purchase and told them to come back when they could pay in cash.”

“Later, they returned with seven or eight others and attacked my sons. They beat me and my daughter Rupa when we tried to protest, and then fled the scene,” Maya said.

Locals took the injured shopkeepers to DMCH around 4pm.
