Chittagong customs house takes Tk47.5 lakh as bribe from exporters and importers to complete customs-related official procedures.
Moreover, Tk17 lakh has to be paid as bribe in releasing import products, says a study conducted by the Transparency International Bangladesh.
TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman came up with the study titled “Chittagong port and custom house import-export automation process: Challenges for good governance and finding out ways” at a press briefing in the capital on Monday.
This employees known as “Faltu” are employed by the officials of Chittagong customs to aide them in collecting illegal money from the businessmen, Iftekhar said.
To avoid illegal transaction of money, there should not be any communication between service providers and receivers, he suggested.
The progress in import-export is remarkable, however it should maintain the economic development further, he added.
Half automation and half manual will enhance corruption at the port, said M Hazfizzuddin Khan, former chairman of the board of trustee of TIB.
