Police challenge muggers fleeing with Tk59 lakh in the city

Update : 07 Jul 2014, 09:11 PM

At least two people, including a policeman, sustained bullet injuries after a gunfight between a gang of muggers and the law enforcers in the capital’s Eskaton area last night.

DMP Ramna Zone Assistant Commissioner Shilbi Noman said a police team, lead by sub-inspectors Iftekhar and Monir Hossain, were patrolling on the road near Janakantha Bhaban around 8:45pm. They heard some pedestrians screaming “muggers, muggers.”

When police approached the scene, they saw three youths fleeing on a motorcycle with a bag. Being chased, the muggers opened fire on the law enforcers.

“One of the bullets fired by the snatchers hit SI Iftekhar. A youth named Liton, who was on the motorcycle, was hit in his leg and fell from the bike with the bag,” he said.

Injured Liton was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Police found Tk59 lakh from the bag. Until 11:30pm, no one claimed ownership of the money. A case would be filed in this connection.
