Over 3,000 phones inoperative for cable theft

Over 3,000 telephones have gone out of order since Monday night in different areas of Bogra town as the underground cable was stolen.

Assistant Engineer (Phone) Narayan Chandra Roy told the Dhaka Tribune: “Unidentified miscreants have cut away eight meters of cable from each of two 800-pairs and one 400-pairs on Monday night. They also cut 24 feet of cable breaking the guide wall of sewage in Fateh Ali Market Area in the town.”

“Due to the cable theft, over 3,000 phones became inoperative in New Market, Shibbati, Katanarpara, Mahila college area, Brindabanpara, Baragola, Badurtala, Phulbari and Battala,” he added.

He also said: “The repairing works would start on Wednesday and the inoperative telephones would start working within at least 15 days.”

In the last week, cable theft left over 700 phone out of order which would take no less than 13 days to repair.

In the same area, some 4,000 telephones went out of order for the same reason in July, 2012.
