A gang of muggers allegedly hacked a wholesaler to death when he tried to save himself from the mugging on the Nabinagar-Kaliakoir highway in Baroipara area in Ashulia yesterday.
The victim, Motaleb Hossain, 33, a fruit wholesaler of the area, came from Nagorpur of Tangail district.
Witness sources said several muggers moved in to snatch money from Motaleb in the morning and at one stage, they stabbed him when he tried to prevent them, leaving him critically injured.
Later, pedestrians whisked him off to a local hospital where on duty doctors declared him dead.
In this regard, Ashulia police station OC Sheikh Badrul Alam said he unofficially heard of the killing.
