A murder case was filed before a Chittagong court yesterday against 10 persons, including eight policemen, in connection with the death of a businessman in police custody on 19 June.
Shimu Akhter, the victim Md Rokunuzzaman’s wife, lodged the case before the court of Magistrate Ahmad Sayeed accusing Sub-Inspector Amir Hossain of Panchlaish police station, Assistant Sub-Inspector Enyaet Hossain of Bakalia police station, Constables Mizanur Rahman, Moslem and Khokon Mia, Ansar Constable Shahinur Alam, driver Akbar of Panchlaish police station, police sources Md Jamal and Humayun Kabir and local Harunur Rashid Duke, said the court sources.
Early on June 19, Rokunuzzaman died in police custody after a police team picked him up from his residence in the city’s Bakalia area.
Family members claimed the team, led by SI Amir Hossain picked Rokunuzzaman up from his residence around 12:30am saying that he was accused of a rape in a case filed with Panchlaish police station on 5 June.
Around 2am, they were informed that his body was at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said Shimu. She claimed that the police had beat her husband to death.
The court ordered the deputy commissioner of Detective Branch of CMP to investigate the matter and submit a report by July 23, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Rezaul Masud.
