The death of a university student, whose body was found in the Karnaphuli River on Sunday night, remains a puzzle to police.
Police recovered the body of Kaisarul Islam, 24, from the river at Sadarghat area in Chittagong city, three days after he went missing on Friday.
Kaisar, 24, was studying electrical and electronics engineering at the University of Information and Technology Science (UITS) in Chittagong. He was a resident of Bakalia area in the city, said police sources.
Kaisar’s family members claimed that he had recently been confronted by his girlfriend’s brother regarding the relationship, and the latter had threatened Kaisar of dire consequences.
They suspect that Kaisar may have been murdered.
Kutub Uddin, Kaisar’s uncle, told the Dhaka Tribune that he had a relationship with Nova, who is also a student and lives near Kaiser’s house.
The family filed a general dairy with Bakalia police station on Friday afternoon when Kaisar went missing and they couldn’t trace his whereabouts.
Another missing complaint was filed by Faisal, Kaisar’s younger brother, with Rapid Action Battalion 7 at their Chandgaon office in this regard, said Kutub Uddin.
Aminur Rashid, sub-inspector at Bakalia police station and the investigating officer of the case, told the Dhaka Tribune that police found out about Kaisar’s relationship with Nova during the primary investigation.
“Police interrogated the girl’s family members, but they denied the allegation made by the victim’s family,” Amin said.
However, the sub-inspector said police had found an SMS sent from Nova’s elder brother Saif’s mobile number on November 10 last year to Kaisar’s elder sister Nisha’s mobile phone. The SMS was a death threat for Kaisar.
Nur Hossain, sub-inspector at Sadarghat police station, said: “The body has been sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem.” A case of unnatural death was filed with the police station in this regard, he added.
