Police, with the help of local people, held four criminals while they were attempting to abduct a private firm official, posing as officers of the Detective Branch, in the capital’s Banani area yesterday.
The arrested are Md Mamun, Abu Bakar, Mostofa Kamal and Dipu alias Al Amin. Police also recovered handcuffs, walkie-talkies and a micro bus from their possession.
According to the officials at Banani police station, there were two more members of the gang who managed to escape.
Meanwhile, the victim, Jan-e-Alam Chowdhury, an official of BD Thai Cosmo Ltd, was admitted to the nearby Ayesha Memorial clinic as the criminals had beaten him up as well.
The victim said the gang intercepted him immediately after he came out of the Banani branch of Brac Bank carrying Tk2.6 lakh.
“The criminals forcibly picked me up in a micro bus from the street near Banani Mosque and handcuffed me,” he said. “Identifying themselves as DB personnel, they also beat me up mercilessly for unknown reasons.”
He said the local people and police came forward when he cried for help. “They also stabbed me in my head,” he added.
Sub-Inspector Shahida Akhter of Banani police station said police had arrested those criminals with the help of the locals in front of Banani Mosque.
The criminals tried to abduct the victim in order to snatch away the money he had withdrawn from the bank, said the sub-inspector.
A case was filed in this connection and police were trying to arrest the member of the gang who had managed to flee, she added.
