A plastic factory owner from the capital’s Kamrangirchar area was allegedly stabbed by local Awami League supporters yesterday for refusing to donate the money demanded by said leaders.
The victim, Mohammad Mintu, 40, is currently being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
He was stabbed in the abdomen when he tried to stop the ruling party activists from taking away equipment and personal belongings from the workers, he told the Dhaka Tribune.
“At first, Mostofa Kamal Sarker, the younger brother of Abul Hossain Sarker, president of Awami League’s Kamrangirchar unit, came to me with his followers on Sunday asking for Tk50,000 as donation for an event to be organised by the Dudumia Memorial Association and Youth Sporting Club on Monday,” Mintu said.
“When I refused to donate the money, they threatened me, saying they would wait for me,” he added.
Then a group of Awami League activists – Saiful, Kashem, Imran and Mizan, among others – went to Mintu’s factory at 12pm yesterday and tried to rob the place.
“When I tried to stop them, they stabbed me in the abdomen with a sharp weapon,” said Mintu.
When asked about the incident, Abul Hossain Sarker denied the allegation.
“This is nothing but a misdeed by a vested group to foil my image. If anyone from my party is found guilty of such criminal inicidents, then action will be taken against them,” he said.
When contacted, Sheikh Mohasin Alam, OC of Kamrangirchar police station, said police would take action against the miscreants responsible for this incident upon receiving an appropriate complaint.
In a separate event, a mason was shot in the chest by miscreants at the capital’s Rampura area yesterday.
The victim, Abdus Salam, 45, is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
“I was standing in front of Sohel Phone-Fax Shop at 10:15am, when a group of men came to the shop and started causing a racket. When I asked them to leave, one of them shot me on the right side of my chest,” said Salam.
When asked about the incident, Alamgir Hossain Bhuiyan, OC of Rampura police station, said they knew about it and an investigation was currently underway.
