A local leader of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) was shot to death by miscreants in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia on Monday, the first day of Bangla New Year.
The deceased was identified as Imsail Hossain Panjer, 56, former vice-president of Mirpur upazila unit of Jasad.
An Awami League leader Shafiqul Islam, 50, was also injured in the gun attack. He is general secretary of ward-9 unit Awami League of Poradah union of the upazila.
When contacted, additional police super of Kushtia Sohel Reza has confirmed the Dhaka Tribune about the death.
He said: “Panjer had a longstanding dispute with his rival Dulal over establishing their supremacy in the locality. He might be killed over the issue.”
Police started a drive to nab the killers, the ASP added.
Mitul, son of the deceased, said a gang of three miscreants riding a motorbike opened fire on Panjer and Shafiqul in the morning while they were taking tea at a shop of Abdur Rashid at Ahmedpur Bazar after morning walk, leaving them injured.
The injured were rushed to Kushtia General Hospital where doctors declared Panjer dead. Critically injured Shafiqul is taking treatment at the hospital.
Panjer who was accused in several cases, including of murder, was released from jail on bail recently.
