Indian national Atanu Datta has been arrested again, this time by the police, for his alleged connection with gambling during the T20 World Cup.
But a mystery shrouded the arrest of the 40-year-old, who is now out on bail, since none of the police officials concerned agreed to talk about the issue.
Imtiyaz Ahmed, deputy commissioner of Mirpur Division, confirmed the arrest of the Indian national in Mirpur in the morning, but declined to disclose anything further.
Additional DC Jasim Uddin said he was not aware of it and referred assistant commissioner of police Shakhawat Hossain as the go-to, instead.
Duty officer Abdul Mannan of Mirpur police station told that Dhaka Tribune in the afternoon that he was not aware of such a situation. He suggested contacting the OC.
Inspector Salauddin Ahmed, OC of Mirpur police station, could not be reached for comments.
But sources in the police said Atanu, the son of Manindra Datta from Dinesh Palli Municiple Park in 24-Pargana,West Bengal, was arrested at Grand Prince Hotel in Mirpur by a team from the Mirpur police station.
The same person was arrested by the elite force at Gabtoli on April 6 for suspected involvement in gambling centring the ICC T20 cricket and by the Benapole Immigration Police on April 3 for staying in Bangladesh illegally.
Later, officials from RAB and other agencies took him into their custody for interrogation.
RAB also filed a case with the Mirpur police station under the ICT Act and handed him over to the police. Atanu was brought before a Dhaka court seeking a remand for seven days, but the court denied the request and gave him bail instead.
Another source said Atanu had also been arrested on March 21 during the matches between India and Pakistan at the Mirpur stadium for his alleged links to match fixing and betting. But somehow, he managed to avoid prosecution.
Atanu came to Bangladesh on March 15 with a business passport and has been staying at the Grand Prince Hotel in Mirpur. His visa expired on March 31.
