Assailants have gunned down two activists of United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) in Baroitoli area under Bhaibon Chhora union of the district on Saturday morning.
The deceased are Natundan Chakma, 38, and Roket Chakma, 35.
Witnesses said a gang of “criminals” numbering five to six suddenly appeared in the scene while Natun and Roket were taking tea at a local tea stall. Sensing danger, they started running. The assailants chased them and opened fire on the UPDF members near Chenga River, leaving them dead on the spot.
Confirming the deaths, UPDF Information and Publicity Secretary Niron Chakma alleged that they were shot dead by activists of Jana Sanghoti Samity (JSS).
However, JSS Information and Publicity Secretary Sajib Chakma denied the allegation.
Khagrachhari Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman said: “We have visited the spot. Investigation is underway and police will soon arrest the killers.”
