A jealous woman and a hired miscreant have been arrested and imprisoned for throwing acid on a divorced woman in Kathalia upazila, Jhalakathi.
The victim, Runu Begum, daughter of Rabbey Ali Boyati and Rehana Begum, has been sent to a care unit in the capital early on Tuesday.
Runu, mother of a two-year-old girl Lamia, was divorced after her husband Lal Mia married another woman Hasina Begum last year, police said.
However, the second wife of Lal Mia increasingly grew jealous after her husband paid frequent visit to Runu and his daughter Lamia.
Hasina Begum hired miscreants Dulal Haoladar and Akkas Haoladar to harm Runu Begum, Kathalia police station acting Officer-in-Charge Abdus Salam said.
The two poured acid on Runu Begum late in the night of March 20, he said. Runu’s mother, Rehana Begum, lodged a case in this regard on April 5.
After 19 days of the incident, jealous wife Hasina Begum and Akkas Ali, one of the miscreants, were arrested on Monday, the acting OC said.
They were sent to jail on Tuesday after being produced at Jhalakathi Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in the morning.
Meanwhile, victim Runu is attending care in the acid-burn victims’ support unit of non-government organisation Brac in the capital with 70% injury.
