Update : 04 Apr 2014, 07:24 PM

At least 25 people, including seven police members, were injured in a clash between transport workers and law enforcers over boarding a bus without ticket at the Police Line area in Kishoreganj yesterday morning.

Kanchan Mia, general secretary of Kishoreganj Zilla Motorjan Sramik Union, said some police members beat up the conductor of a passenger bus when he stopped them from boarding it without tickets.

“They also beat Kaiyum, organising secretary of District Labour Union, Dwin Islam Dinu, executive member, and Babul Mia when they went to rescue the conductor,” he added.

He demanded for quick action from the authorities in this regard and warned of tougher movement.

Osman Ali, general secretary of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation, said bus movement had been suspended on Dhaka-Kishoreganj route from Mohakhali and Saidabad bus stands following the incident.

Meanwhile, transport workers halted bus movement in Gaital inter-district bus terminal in Kishoreganj around 11am.

The workers claimed that the law enforcers had vandalised around 10 buses in the area.

Abdul Malek, officer in-charge of Kishoreganj Sadar police station, said: “Police fired rubber bullets and charged batons to disperse the workers.” The situation was now under control, he added.

Police also detained two bus drivers named Hira and Masum from the scene.
