A Chittagong court yesterday issued arrest warrant against Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury, Nayeb-e-Ameer of Hefazat-e-Islam, in two cases filed in connection with grenade blasts at his Lalkhan Bazar madrasa in which three students were killed in October last year.

Metropolitan Magistrate Nowrin Akhter Kakon yesterday passed the order in absentia of the accused in two cases filed for killing and recovery of picric acid, court sources said.

Izhar’s counsel Abdus Sattar said the accused was on bail secured from the High Court till March 27. The defence also pleaded for bail extension although the accused had not appeared before the court due to illness.

Another Chittagong court on March 27 issued arrest warrant against Mufti Izhar, also chairman of a faction of Islami Oikya Jote, in a blast case filed over the same incident.

Several locally-made grenades were blasted at the Jamiatul Ulum Al Islamia Madrasa, a Qawmi madrasa headed by Mufti Izhar, around 11am on October 7 last year leaving five students critically injured. Three of them later succumbed to injuries.

Four live grenades were recovered from the madrassa after the incident. Law enforcers also seized 18 bottles of picric acid, used for amplifying the magnitude of explosion, from the residence of the Hefazat leader on the madrasa premises. The madrasa is known as a den of outlawed Islamist group Huji.

Police on October 10 filed three cases in connection with the blast, killing and recovery of picric acid.
