A month on, housewife’s killer still at large

Update : 28 Mar 2014, 07:38 PM

A month has passed since a housewife was killed at Jujkhola in Shikder Mollik union in the district, but police are yet to arrest the miscreants.

The locals have expressed anger over the reluctance of law enforcers in nabbing the miscreants behind the killing of Moksuda Akhter.

Sub-inspector of the thana police station Bikash Chandra told the Dhaka Tribune that drive was on to nab the culprits.

Moksuda, 19, daughter of Mojibor Rahman, tied the knot with Jahidul Islam, son of Jahangir Gazi on December 24, 2012.

Following the marriage, Jahid and Gazi allegedly borrowed Tk24,000 from Mojibor.

Mojibor alleged that Moksuda’s brother-in-law Rocky Gazi and mother-in-law Nasima Begum beat his daughter up demanding Tk100,000 in dowry on February 12. At one point, the girl became unconscious.

The deceased’s father claimed that Moksuda’s in-laws were trying to portray the murder as suicide. They poured poison in her mouth following her death in an attempt to hide the real incident.

Her husband first took her to Kachua upazila of Bagerhat and then to Bagerhat District Hospital, said Mojibor.

Moksuda’s mother Hasina Begum said: “We married Moksuda off to Jahidul as the latter had been harassing my daughter since she was a ninth grader. We are disappointed that the killers haven’t been detained.”

Shikder Mollik union parishad member Md Amir Hossain said Jahidul wedded another girl before Moksuda but she left him as she had been tortured. “He then married Moksuda forcefully.”

Mojibor Rahman said he lodged a case with Pirojpur Sadar police station on February 20, accusing five, including Jahidul, in connection with his daughter’s death.
