Mysterious ‘suicide’ leaves questions unanswered

Update : 27 Mar 2014, 08:13 PM

In a tragic incident, a 25-year-old girl yesterday took her own life in the capital’s Mohakhali. However, her parents claimed she was murdered.

The victim was Israt Jahan Banni, daughter of Ahsan Ullah residing in Uttar Mugda of Modinabagh.

“The girl took poison and died soon after she was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 02:30pm,” Mozammel Haque, Inspector of DMCH police outpost, told the Dhaka Tribune.

“We have detained Abdur Rahman, 32, son of Abdul Aziz of Mithapukur in Durgapur. He claimed he had a love affair with Banni,” Mozammel added.

Banni’s father Ahsan Ullah told the Dhaka Tribune that Abdur Rahman developed a relation with Banni a year ago. “He claimed to be a drama director and said he would give my daughter a role. He also took Tk200,000 from Banni in that regard.”

Father of the victim said his daughter took the money from her mother as he refused to give it.

“When I came to know about it, I forced her last month to bring the money back. When Banni pressured Abdur Rahman to return the money, he just killed her,” Ahsan alleged.

Sufia Kamal, mother of the victim, said Banni had got into altercation with her when she told her to bring the money back from Abdur. “She then left the house on March 2 and began living with Abdur. She sounded upset when she called me last night.”

Abdur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune in police custody that he had so far made four dramas, namely “Khoj the artist”, “Taharar Sonnasi”, “Songshoy”, and “Nil Shopno”.

“Of these, Taharar Sonnasi was aired on ETV. I gave her a role in “Khoj the artist.” On March 3, she came to my residence and said that her parents had forced her to leave. Since then, she was living with me. I live in a bachelor’s flat which is why I had to introduce her as my wife to others,” he said.

Abdur went on: “She got too upset about her parents’ attitude and also attempted suicide several times but I managed to calm her. On Tuesday night, she attempted to poison herself to death again but I managed to throw it out. In my absence the next morning, she took it.”

Abdur said sometimes she would extend financial assistance to him. “But I would not take much from her. It is now just a blame against me as I was about to marry her after securing a job.”
