The Detective Branch (DB) of the Khulna police staked out the bridge area on Thursday based on a tip. They engaged in a shootout with two armed criminals in the afternoon.
The criminals – Bellal Hossain, 26, and Lavlu Mia, 30 were arrested in an injured state.
They have been taken to the DB office pending interrogation.
Two police constables Md Mikail and Shishir were also injured. They are being treated at the Khulna Police Hospital.
Khulna Assistant Commissioner (DB) AM Kamrul Islam said: “Our DB team was tipped off about criminal activities in the area. They took cover and kept watch for criminal activities. At about 5pm in the afternoon, the police approached some suspicious motorcyclists. The motorcyclists opened fire and shot two rounds at the police. Our police team gave chase and captured two of the criminals in injured condition.”
He added that the police also found a Chinese pistol and three rounds of magazine on the criminals.
