Father suspected for Sabbir murder

Update : 17 Mar 2014, 09:01 PM

Police are suspecting that the father of Sabbir, a schoolchild whose body was found in the Shitalakkhya on March 16, might have been involved in the murder of his own son over family dispute.

Sabbir, the eldest son of Mobarak Hossain’s second wife, went missing on March 7 after allegedly visiting a fair in Narayanganj. Later, Mobarak filed a general diary with Narayanganj police station.

On March 16, some young boys found the body of Sabbir in the Shitalakhya. The police primarily suspected that the killers were local residents or had help from the locals.

Without mentioning any name, Mobarak also filed a murder case with Narayanganj police station. The police detained four of Sabbir’s friends – Mahim, Himel, Masum and Mohasin – all students of class VI at Tajek High School.

SM Monzur Kabir, officer-in-charge of Narayanganj police station, told the Dhaka Tribune that four friends of Sabbir had been interrogated, but it was unlikely that they had committed the murder. Even if the teenagers had killed Sabbir, it was “unbelievable” that they had the mental capacity to make Sabbir disappear, he added.

The OC said they were trying to learn if there was any conflict centring Mobarak's marriage to Sabbir’s mother or any tension surrounding Sabbir’s mother having a job.

When asked about his son’s death, Mobarak said some of Sabbir’s friends had beaten his son up earlier over an altercation for throwing a sandal in the river. The boys went away when he stopped the fight, but Sabbir also went with them. Sabbir had been missing until his body was found on March 16.
