AL leader fined for illegal power connection

Update : 13 Mar 2014, 09:08 PM

An Awami League leader was fined Tk 3,800 yesterday for illegally using power connections to run a pump house and supply irrigated water to a maize field in Rasulpur village, Patgram upazila.

The AL leader was identified as Rabiul Islam Miron, president of the Bawra union unit of AL. Power Development Board (PDB) officials seized the electric motor from the pump house.

Miron had been running the motor for the last one month using an illegal power connection, PDB resident engineer in Patgram Moktar Hossain quoted the locals as saying.

The AL leader hired labourers to operate the motor, which supplied water to a 25-bigha maize field owned by him, Moktar added.

Because of political pressure, PDB officials did not file any case against the AL leader and he was only subjected to monetary penalty, PDB sources said.

When asked, Moktar, however, kept mum on this.

Miron was also involved in an incident where a piece of land of a Hindu family in the village was grabbed on February 9.
