The body of a seven-year-old boy with injuries on the head has been found in a bush near a match factory in the capital's Shyampur area on Wednesday.
The deceased is Abdullah, son of Golam Mostofa, a driver of Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) and also an inhabitant of the area.
Abdullah's mother Ayesha Begum, who works at a local community centre, told the Dhaka Tribune: “Abdullah went to play outside in the afternoon while I was at my work. Suddenly a local woman came to me and informed that they have found my son lying on the ground.
“I went to the spot immediately after acknowledging the matter and saw my son lying motionless. He was seen bleeding from his forehead and a large stone, and a tennis ball were found near his body.”
Ayesha suspected that someone hit her son with the large stone, leaving him dead on the spot.
Family members took the boy to Dhaka Medical College hospital (DMCH), where the doctors declared him dead around 3:30pm, said Kazi Wazed Ali, officer-in-charge of Kadamtoli police station.
Being informed, Shyampur police station SIs Azharul and Jakir visited the spot and collected the stone and the tennis ball for further examination.
SI Azhar told the Dhaka Tribune: “The recovered stone weighs about 10kg.”
When asked for the reason behind the death, the police officials said noting can be said in this connection until the autopsy reports come. Investigation is underway, they added.
Neither Abdullah's mother nor his father could tell any motive behind the killing.
