A person, who was arrested over police firearm theft, was killed in a “gunfight” with police early Sunday in Shalikha upazila of Magura.

The deceased was identified as Rajib Biswas, son of late Abdul Jalil.

Magura Additional Police Super Mizanur Rahman confirmed the death to the Dhaka Tribune.

Mizan said: “Raju was arrested from Simakhali Bazar area of the upazila on Saturday night for his involvement in the theft of a submachine gun (SMG) from police possession during election duty at Ghobra Primary School polling station in Shalikha upazila early Thursday.”

Later, police recovered the stolen SMG from Raju on Saturday night, he said.

Following Raju’s statement, police conducted a drive along with Raju in a field near by Ghobra Primary School to recover more arms and to arrest other criminals.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Raju’s cohorts opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to fire back which triggered a gunfight.

During the time, Raju died on the spot, Mizan said.

Police recovered two pipe guns, six rounds of bullets from the spot.

There were eight cases filed against Rajib, , Shalikha police station Officer-in-Charge Biplab Kumar Nath said.

Rajib was an alleged member of Tota Group, an extremist organisation, he added.
