BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has claimed that the government disrespected the martyrs who were killed during the BDR carnage by deciding to inaugurate the opening session of the Asia Cup on February 25.
He made the statement while addressing a press conference in the capital on Tuesday afternoon.
Frst match of Asia Cup begun earlier in the day and the opening ceremony was set to be held at night.
Fakhrul said: “Our leader [Khaleda Zia] has urged the government not to inaugurate the Asia Cup on February 25, the fifth anniversary of the BDR carnage."
"The government has disrespected the martyrs by opening the Asia Cup on this day,” he added.
Seventy-four people, including 57 army officials, were killed during the gruesome mutiny on February 25-26, 2009 at the Pilkhana headquarters.
Later, the court awarded death to 152 including a deputy assistant director of Bangladesh Rifles and life imprisonment to 161 others for their role in the carnage.
