Elderly woman dies after petrol bomb attack

Update : 13 Feb 2014, 08:17 PM

An elderly woman succumbed to burn injuries that she suffered in a petrol bomb attack, at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday.

Family members of Ayesha Khatun, 96, alleged that some miscreants hurled petrol bombs at her on February 6 because her son refused paying extortion.

Partha Sankar Pal, residential surgeon of the burn unit, told the Dhaka Tribune: “Ayesha was undergoing treatment with 30% burn injuries.”

Ayesha’s grandchild Silvi said her father Abu Taher Sazu was a businessperson. A group of criminals has been demanding huge sum of money from him for a long time.

She alleged that they also tried to kill her father several times. Her parents left the country couple of months back for security reasons. The criminals also attacked Silvi’s younger sister, a student of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, several times, she claimed.

As her grandmother did not provide any information, the criminals hurled petrol bombs at her last week, Silvi said, adding that the criminals also killed her uncle Foyez Ahmed on April 7 last year for the same reason.

Silvi said she was facing too much trouble and feeling insecure.

Asked, she said they were too afraid to make any complaint in this regard.
