AL leader grabs WDB land

A local leader of Bangladesh Awami Bastuhara League allegedly grabbed a land of the Water Development Board (WDB) at Raipur upazila of Lakshmipur.

Locals claimed that the Raipur Charkachhiya Bhumihin Samabay Samiti took lease of an 84 decimal land from the revenue office of the local WDB five years ago, adding that the organisation had been paying taxes regularly since then.

Harunur Rashid, local leader of Bangladesh Awami Bastuhara League, along with 10-15 armed men allegedly grabbed the land beside Charkachhiya police outpost on Tuesday. They also looted betel leaves and coconuts of fifty trees cultivated by the organisation in the land.

He allegedly grabbed the land in collusion with local Juba League and Bastuhara League leaders and activists. Several locals also alleged that WDB officials and the police outpost indifferent in this regard, and added that the officials concerned had taken a large amount of bribe from Rashid.

Contacted, Harunur Rashid claimed: “I have occupied the land after taking permission from the Lakshmipur revenue office.”

He also threatened the reporters, saying: “Let’s see if you can write a report about this.”

WDB officials Md Hanif and Md Zakir Hossain claimed that they tried to resist Rashid who told them to meet him later. On condition of anonymity, one PDB official concerned told the Dhaka Tribune over phone that whenever a government comes to power its affiliated organisations do business by grabbing the land, adding that the leaders of such organisations consider the land as their own property.
