Four jailed for life for kidnapping minor boy

A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced life in prison to four persons and fined Tk50,000 each for kidnapping a nine-year-old boy from the district’s Sitakunda upazila in 2011 and for demanding ransom.

The Judge of Women and Children Oppression Repression Tribunal 2 Md Zakir Hossain gave the verdict, said MA Naser, prosecutor of the tribunal.

The convicts are Abdur Razzak, Mohammad Nasir, Eshak alias Gias Uddin and Mohammad Jafor. 

Of the convicts, Razzak and Nasir are in prison while two others are on the run.

The prosecutor said as the charges against the accused were proved beyond any doubt before the court so, the court pronounced the verdict under section 8 of Women and Children Oppression Repression Act-2000 (amended in 2003).

According to the prosecution, the accused kidnapped Sadman Jaman Sami, son of Abddul Motaleb, of Middle Jahanabad of Madam Bibirhat area in Sitakunda, on March 25, 2011 and took the victim to a remote hilly area of the upazila. Later, the kidnappers demanded Tk50 lakh from the victim’s father.

On the following day, a case was lodged with Sitakunda police station in this connection while police rescued Sami from the area.

Police submitted a charge sheet against the four accused on July 19, in 2011 while the court framed the charges against them on July 4, 2012.

The court gave the verdict after listening to the testimonies of 11 prosecution witnesses.
