The Anti-Corruption Commission yesterday questioned a personal secretary to former state minister for water resources Mahbubur Rahman in connection with an allegation of illegal accumulation of wealth.
The commission has already sought information by February 16 about the former minister’s wealth from seven organisations including Rajuk, Dhaka City Corporation, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, Dhaka Stock Exchange and the Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh.
On January 22, the graft buster assigned Khairul Huda, one of its deputy directors, to investigate the allegations against Mahbubur, who is also an MP from Patuakhali.
The investigator has already visited a number government offices in Patuakhali to gather information on the assets owned by the lawmaker, his wife Preeti Rahman and their children. He also talked to local Awami League supporters and Mahbubur’s business partners.
Sources in Patuakhali have told the Dhaka Tribune that Mahbubur and his wife own hundreds of acres of land in various areas of the district. The couple also own several companies including Gangamoti Traders and Andharmanik Traders.
Some of their construction firms have been reportedly implementing projects on behalf of government bodies like the Water Development Board, Local Government and Engineering Department and municipality offices.
