A mother was arrested for allegedly killing her 14-day-old child in Sundarganj upazila, Gaibandha in view of oppression from in-laws for conceiving a girl.
Sumi Akter, 20, daughter of Abdul Jalil from Bazaar upazila, married Shahin Miah, 22, from the same upazila 18 months ago, locals said.
But, their relationship was troubled and the couple used to fight often. They gave birth to their daughter Sumaiya Akhter 14 days ago.
The family of the in-laws said to have oppressed Sumi for conceiving a girl child. On Monday night, a quarrel picked up between Sumi and her mother in-law.
Angered, Sumi hurt her child. The baby was rushed to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital, but the doctors declared her dead.
A case was filed with Sundarganj police against Sumi on Tuesday, who was soon arrested. She has been sent to jail while the dead baby was taken to hospital morgue.
Sunderganj police Officer-in-Charge Mojammel Hossain endorsed the incident to the Dhaka Tribune.
