Update : 03 Feb 2014, 06:34 PM

Police arrested a college student on charge of attempting to kidnap her cousin for a gold chain in Sirajganj on Sunday.

The detainee is one Rita Khatun, 20, a class eleven student of Rojob Ali Memorial Science College and the daughter of a fish trader named Sonowar Bepari.

The accused was produced before court yesterday with police requesting a five-day remand for her in order to further investigate into her involvement with the abduction.

Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Habibul Islam said Rita had tried to kidnap her cousin Asha, 10, a student of Hosenpur (South) Government Primary School in the municipality, to steal her gold chain in order to repay the loans that she had acquired from neighbours. Asha is the daughter of Rita’s uncle.

On Sunday Rita came by the school where Asha studies, planning to kidnap her. Hearing Asha’s screams and cries, teachers and students went to investigate, rescued Asha and handed Rita over to the police, he said.

After being arrested, Rita tried to frame one of her friends as the perpetrator.  However, she admitted trying to kidnap her cousin after interrogation.

Salam Bepari, Asha’s father, filed a case with Sirajganj Sadar thana in connection to the incident, Sub-Inspector Abdul Barek said.
