Identified criminals have tortured a Hindu couple at Dakatia village under Jhenaidah sadar when they failed to realise ransom from the house owner.
The injured were admitted to Jhenaidah sadar hospital for treatment, said locals.
Victim Phanibhushan Roy, who is a firewood trader, said a gang of local criminals had been creating pressure on him for a long time. Recently they demanded Tk50,000.
On Saturday afternoon, failing to realise the money, some eight criminals swooped on the inmates of the house. They started beating up Phanibhushan and his wife Madhuri Roy, he told the Dhaka Tribune at the hospital.
The criminals also looted gold ornaments and cash worth at least Tk2.1 lakh from their house, said the couple.
Phanibhushan filed a case naming five criminals with Jhenaidah sadar police station.
OC Iqbal Bahar Choudhury said the police were working to arrest the perpetrators.
