Neighbours rescue minor house-maid

Update : 29 Jan 2014, 07:30 AM

A couple and their university-going children were detained for allegedly torturing an 11-year-old female domestic help in Badda area of the capital.

Victim Halima Akhter, daughter of a poor farmer in Barisal, was rescued and admitted to a hospital in critical condition. She has been serving the house for a year.

Badda police detained retired Bangladesh Navy official Tofazzal Hossain, 60, his wife Ayesha Akhter, 55, and their children, a son and daughter, around 11:30pm on Tuesday.

Badda police station Officer-in-Charge MA Jalil said the minor house-help was rescued upon information from neighbours that Haliam was being tortured regularly.

“Halima was being tortured physically and mentally. Marks on her body bear witness to those tortures,” he said.

Halima was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he said. The family has admitted torturing the girl and has apologised for their activities.

Police will file a case in this regard if the guardian of the victim does not, the OC added.
