A leader of Swechhasebak League, the voluntary wing of ruling Awami League, was hacked dead in the capital’s Moghbazar area on Thursday night.
The dead was Mahbubur Rahman Rana, 32, the general secretary of Ramna Thana unit Swechhasebak League, police and relatives said.
The assailants blasted crude bombs and hacked Rana at Moghbazar intersection before fleeing the scene firing gunshots around 7pm, witnesses said.
Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital declared him dead around 7:30pm.
Ramna police station Officer-in-Charge Mashiur Rahman confirmed the death. “Police are trying to identify the killers and the motive of murder.”
Witnesses said four motorbike-riding persons intercepted Rana while he was passing through the area with an affiliate Ripin on a motorcycle.
The attack was carried out within minutes and amidst a densely populated area.
