The death toll from the Saturday clash between two factions of Awami League in Jhenaidah has climbed to two after 15-year-old Shah Alam, a class ten student, died in hospital yesterday.
Arif Hossain, 22, another activist of the ruling party, was killed on the spot.
The clash took place following an altercation between supporters of Awami League leader Abdul Malek and Fursundi UP Chairman Shahid Sikdar at Tikari Bazar under Jhenaidah sadar upazila on Saturday night, leaving 14 injured and two dead so far.
Locals said the clash was the result of a longstanding feud between the two groups which intensified after an attack on Sahid’s nephew, allegedly by his opponents.
Both groups had come prepared with firearms and weapons and fought until police intervened. Arif was shot and killed on the spot.
Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, officer in charge of Jhenaidah police station, confirmed the news of the deaths and said no case was filed yet in this connection.
Shah Alam’s body was sent to the morgue of Magura general hospital for postmortem examination.
Of the injured, six were taken to Jhenaidah general hospital, while the remaining eight to Magura general hospital.
