The decision to go against the militants was made at a meeting in the Police Headquarters yesterday.
The IGP said the drive was a part of efforts to strengthen anti-terror and anti-militancy campaigns and to collect information on militants using community policing.
Terming the murder of SP Babul Akhter's wife ruthlessly brutal and tragic, Shahidul ordered law enforcers to arrest perpetrators behind the killing as soon as possible.
As part of other decisions reached at yesterday's meeting, the IGP also issued directives on updating the list of the country's militants, increasing surveillance on different religious organisations, making community policing more effective, increasing surveillance on pilgrims and tenants, and providing security to foreigners.
He also instructed young police recruits to rise above self interests and engage fully in crime fighting.
Earlier in the day, the IGP visited SP Babul at his house in Dhaka's Banasree. There, he spoke with Babul's family and children and expressed his sympathies.
