Update : 19 Dec 2013, 09:38 PM

A UP chairman, and local BNP leader, was shot dead by unidentified assailants at Battala Bazar, Friday.

The deceased was one Rafiqul Islam Faruk, 47, vice-president of the Sadar upazila unit of BNP and chairman of Dainna Union Parishad. He was also the joint-secretary general of the Bangladesh UP Chairman Samity.

Tangail Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazrul Islam said: “A group of assailants opened fire on Faruk at a place nearby Battala Bazar while he was going to the local market from his home sometime near 7am, leaving him dead on the spot.”

Police suspected that the miscreants might have killed the BNP leader to establish supremacy in the area. However, no arrests were made in this connection.

Notably, Faruk, a three-time elected chairman of Dainna Union Parishad, had been living in a rented house in the Akurtakur area of the town for security reasons.
