Double murder suspect killed in police ‘shootout’ in the capital

Update : 18 Dec 2013, 08:36 PM

The suspected killer of two day-labourers in the capital’s Badda was reportedly been killed in a “shootout” with police in Rampura yesterday, the day after the double murder.

Identified as Mohammad Sohag, 26, the youth succumbed to his bullet wounds whilst undergoing treatment at the Orthopedic Hospital (Pongu Hospital) in the capital’s Agargaon area during the afternoon.

“The deceased was one of the criminals, who fired a gun leaving Faruq Hawlader, a contractor of day labourers, and labourer Milon Hawlader, 26, dead. He also injured another labourer, Mahmud Hossain,” said Iqbal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Badda police station.

“Having been tipped-off that Sohag had been staying in Aftabnagar between Badda and Rampura, a team of police raided the area at 5pm,” said the OC.

Sensing a police presence, the criminals opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate, resulting in a gunfight for several minutes.

The police official said that at one stage the gang of criminals ran away leaving the wounded Sohag.

The Badda OC said they arrested the wounded Sohag with a pistol in his possession and admitted him to the Pongu Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries in the afternoon.

Sub-Inspector Golam Mostofa of Badda police station said Faruq Hossain, owner of the under-construction building where the gun attack took place, filed a case in connection with the double murder, accusing unidentified armed criminals.

Police said a few other suspects had also been detained in this regard, but they declined to disclose their identities.

A gang of masked criminals launched a gun attack at the construction site on Tuesday morning, leaving two day-labourers dead and another injured, in the capital’s Moinarbagh at Modhya Badda.

Police and witnesses said the gun attack was carried out following a refusal to pay extortion money to the gang by the owner of the construction site.
