Update : 18 Dec 2013, 08:01 PM

Manikchhari police station, along with its armoury, was gutted in a fire in Khagrachhari in the early hours yesterday.

Officer-in-charge of the police station Keshob Chakrawarty told the Dhaka Tribune that the fire had originated from an electrical short circuit at its barracks around 7am, and soon engulfed the nearby armoury.

The wireless operator room and detention cell inside the police station were also burnt to ashes, the OC said.

Upon receiving information, a firefighting unit from Ramgarh upazila rushed to the spot and doused the blaze with the help of policemen around 8am

The OC claimed that property worth about Tk 1 crore was gutted in the fire.

The police station is located atop a hill in Manikchhari upazila, almost 70km away from Khagrachhari district headquarters.

There are no fire service and civil defence station at that upazila, the OC said.

Firefighters arrived from the adjacent Ramgarh upazila, which is 50km away from the spot.

However, no casualties were reported, as most of the policemen were on blockade duty.

Those police personnel who were at the police station managed to escape after the fire broke out.
