Five persons were killed and several others injured as the activists of ruling Awami League and Jamaat-Shibir clashed following an attack on Asaduzzaman Noor’s motorcade in Ramganj Bazar area of Nilphamari on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Khorshed Alam Chowdhury, president of Topamari Union Krishak League, Abu Bakar Siddique, a Jamaat activist, and Farhad Hossain, organising secretary of union Juba League and his brother Murad Hossain, a Juba League activist, and Lebu Mia, an AL activist.
Nilphamari Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Abu Akkas Ahmed confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.
Murad and Lebu Mia succumbed to their injuries at the Rangpur Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment, Altaf Hussain, medical officer of the hospital confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune.
The clash erupted following the attack on the motorcade of MP Asaduzzaman Noor made by Jamaat-Shibir activists while Noor was on election campaign in his constituency (Nilphamari-2) at around 4pm, said the OC.
Asaduzzaman Noor is unhurt, he said.
Police fired 141 rounds of shotgun shells and 37 rounds of rubber bullets to calm the situation, he added.
The injured were admitted to Nilphamari sadar hospital.
“Of the injured, four have been sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition,” said Fazlul Hoque Tansen, residential medical officer of the sadar hospital.
