Jamaat-Shibir activists vandalised and torched a number of houses, shops and vehicles at Palashbari and Sundarganj upazilas in Gaibandha on Tuesday night after hearing the news that Abdul Quader Mollah would be executed at midnight.
Sources said as the news spread the Jamaat-Shibir men started their subversive activities in the evening and continued it till 10pm.
During the period, they vandalised the house of Upazila Parishad Chairman AKM Mokshed Chowdhury Bidyut at Professorpara and torched his jeep and private car.
The Jamaat-Shibir men also vandalised the houses of former MP and president of upazila Awami League Tofazzal Hossain Sarkar, freedom fighters – Menhaz Uddin and Shakhawat Jaman Prodhan – and Jubo League leader Munir Hossain one after another.
Later, they torched business establishment of organising secretary of upazila AL Abdul Matin.
The troublemakers set fire to several shops and two motorcycles on the Rangpur-Bogra Highway.
Besides, they blasted more than a hundred of crude bombs on the road to create panic among the people.
Police fired bullets from shot guns and lobbed a few tear gas shells at the troublemakers to bring the situation under control, said Nasir Uddin Mondal, officer-in-charge of Palashbari police station.
Apart from it, the workers and leaders of Jammat-Shibir also vandalised houses and business establishments at Domerhat, Chhaitantala and Belka villages under Sundarganj upazila.
Police Super M Shajid Hussain said members of law enforcing agencies including police, members of Border Guards Bangladesh and Rapid Action Battalion had been sent there.
Additional members of law enforcing agencies had been patrolling the spots to avoid any untoward incident, he added.
