Shibir men clash with police, snatch firearms

Picketing Jamaat-Shibir men allegedly snatched a pistol from a policeman of Kadomtoli Police Station by assaulting him physically in capital’s Shonir Akhra during the hartal hour and clashed with the police in Badda and old part of Dhaka leaving several people injured.

Police said a group of picketing Jamaat-Shibir men swooped on sub-inspector Abdul Khalek near Shonir Akhra Bridge while he was on way to his workplace from his residence by a motorcycle at around 9am. The Shibir men assaulted him physically and snatched away with the pistol leaving him injured, said police of Kadamtoli Station.

Talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Ilias Sharif, deputy commissioner of Wari Division, however, said they were investigating the matter to be sure of whether the Shibir men or other criminals were involved in the incident. ‘We are also investigating whether the SI really came under attack by the criminals and his firearm was snatched”, the DC said and added,

“The physical condition of the SI is no almost well.” In Badda: Jamaat-Shibir men locked into a clash with law enforcers at Shahajadpur of Badda at around 11am and attacked the police and Rab men with explosions of around 30 crude bombs and brick chips indiscriminately.

The law enforcers also resorted to fire around 20 rounds gunshots. The clash ensued when a procession brought out in support of the hartal enforced by Jamaat.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Nurul Amin said police resorted to open firing when the picketing Jamaat-Shibir men ransacked vehicle and created anarchy through explosions of indiscriminate bombs.

He said a joint drive was launched to arrest the criminal who created the anarchy and attacked the law enforcers. Police brought the situation under control and detained several people as suspects.

In old Dhaka, a clash between police and Shibirmen near the court area left several people inured at around 8:30am.

The clash erupted when Shibir men from Jagannath University brought out a procession along with explosions several crude bombs and police chased after them in front of the court buildings. Shah Alam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station said police went into action when the Shibir cadres exploded bombs from a procession.
