A Belabo woman in Gafargaon upazila was tortured by her husband for a larger dowry.
The victim was Rima Akhtar.
Police said Rima’s husband, Sohel Miah, and her in-laws subjected her to torture for dowry.
Sources said Rima, an orphan and daughter of the late Chandu Miah of the village of Belabo, was married to Sohel from the same village four years ago.
Sohel took around Tk1,60,000 in cash as dowry, police said, quoting Rima.
Rima had a two-year-old daughter.
Five months ago, Sohel married another girl at Masterbari in Bhaluka without Rima’s permission and started to torture her.
Recently, Sohel demanded a fresh dowry of Tk3,00,000 from Rima and threatened to drive her out of his house if she failed to meet the demand.
As Rima expressed her inability to meet the demand, an altercation
broke out and Sohel and his family members allegedly beat her several times.
They also shaved off her hair and confined her in a room on Wednesday night.
After hearing what had happened, locals rescued Rima on Thursday morning and caught Sohel red-handed.
They handed Sohel to village police but some influential person helped him escape from police custody, said the officer-in-charge of Pagla police station.
A poor Rima, along with her daughter, is now passing her days in misery.
Selim Ahmed, chairman of the local Moshakhali union parishad said the culprits must be brought to book.
“I have already talked to the local administration and police, telling them to handle the case seriously,” he said.
Rima filed a case with the local police station accusing nine persons including Sohel and his mother Shahor Banu.
At the time of filing this report, nobody has been arrested in connection with the case.
