BGB trooper killed by smuggler

A trooper of the paramilitary Border Guard Battalion (BGB) died and a fellow Havildar was injured when smugglers ran over the duo in Satkhira Sadar.

The deceased trooper was identified as Abdul Jabbar, 36, from Monirampur upazila in Jessore. The injured man was Abdur Rashid from Jhalkathi.

BGB 38 Operation Officer Major Anwarul Mazhar described the incident.

The smugglers were driving a pick-up van laden with raisins imported from China and were heading to the border on Tuesday night when the two BGB men tried to intercept them in the Alipur area.

They signaled the van to stop, but the vehicle paid no heed and ran them over. Abdul Jabbar died from excessive bleeding on the spot.

BGB 38 officials recovered the duo after receiving news. The injured Havildar was first admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital and later shifted to Jessore Military Hospital.

Satkhira Sadar police Officer-in-Charge Enamul Haque said an autopsy would be conducted on Wednesday morning. “BGB will file a case in this regard.”
