The managing committee of a primary school at Moheshpur upazila in the district fined a teacher Tk105, 000 for trying to violate a student of Class-V on the school campus.

The penalty was imposed on Tuesday afternoon in presence of accused teacher Hafizur Rahman, an assistant teacher of Bhabdia-Garapota government primary school under Moheshpur upazila in Jhenidah.

Locals said Hafizur tried to violate the girl on October 27 on the school campus. As the girl informed her guardians about it the school management committee called an arbitration.

Manirul Islam, president of Bhabdia-Garapota government primary school, said the arbitration was held on the school premises where the accused himself and guardians of both the accused and the victim were present.

Ward member of Banshbaria union parishad Mohammad Khokan said during the arbitration, the accused teacher Hafizur admitted his guilt and sought an apology for what he had done.

The headmaster of Bhabdia-Garapota government primary school Shahjahan Ali did not respond to several attempts by the Dhaka Tribune to contact him, eventually switching his phone off.

Moheshpur Upazila Primary Education Officer Rafiqul Islam said he had sent a letter to the authorities concerned to take immediate and necessary action against the accused teacher.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nasima Khatun said she along with a number of local government officials had visited the family and the victim.

The UNO assured the girl and her family members of all possible help while also advising the family to fight the matter legally, saying the local administration would follow the rule of law in all respects.
