Police recovered explosive materials, crude bomb-making equipment and 9,000 paper masks during a police raid in South Keraniganj, Dhaka, on Friday, with a 30-year-old man arrested in connection with the case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations Division) Md Aktar Hossain disclosed the information at a briefing on Friday afternoon, identifying the arrested man as Zahid Hasan Emon.
According to Shyampur Model police station sources, a crude bomb exploded in front of Jatrabari police station on September 19. Police from Jatrabari, Shyampur and other concerned police stations under the Wari Division jointly began investigating the incident.
During the investigation, police found information and evidence suggesting Zahid Hasan Emon’s involvement. Following this, Shyampur Model police station, with assistance from South Keraniganj police station, arrested him in the Baghapur area under South Keraniganj police station early Friday.
Based on information provided after his arrest, police recovered 1kg 500g of caustic soda and 1kg 600g of sulfur used in making crude bombs, 5kg of marbles, 2kg of 1-inch barbed nails, 20 pieces of red cellophane tape and 11 pieces of black cellophane tape used for wrapping crude bombs.
Police also recovered 9,000 paper masks in 3 cartons, 30 packets of elastic used to wear the masks, and a Jaipan-brand blender and jar used to grind materials for making crude bombs.
Police said Zahid Hasan Emon confessed that the masks prepared for malicious purposes had been sent to him through an unidentified van driver via a leader from Lalbagh. The masks were later stored at his residence for distribution among various leaders and activists.
