Police have taken MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Begum, into custody following the recovery of the hanging body of his second wife, Mosammat Mariam Khatun, 19, from the NAM Bhaban.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Tejgaon Zone Deputy Commissioner Ibn-e Mizan briefed reporters at around 10pm on Sunday.
"The CID’s crime scene unit collected evidence from the scene. After an inquest, the body was sent to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital for autopsy,” he said.
He said it would be possible to determine whether it was a case of murder or suicide after the investigation.
Earlier in the evening, the hanging body of Mosammat Morium Khatun was recovered from a flat at NAM Bhaban in the capital on Sunday evening.
Gazi Nazrul Islam was elected MP from Satkhira-4 in the 13th parliamentary election with Jamaat-e-Islami’s nomination.
In July, a video showing him in a private moment with a young woman went viral on social media. He later said the woman was his second wife, Mariam Khatun.
On July 22, Jamaat expelled Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party and wrote to the Speaker, the Election Commission and other relevant authorities seeking action against him.
