Pickets kill truck driver in Satkania

A truck driver died in the hands of pickets in Satkania of Chittagong in the early hours of Monday during the opposition's 60-hour nationwide shutdown.

Satkania Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Latif said Mohammad Wasim, 31, was killed when pickets were vandalising a truck in Hasmater Dokan area around 1:30am.

The truck was headed for Cox's Bazar from Chittagong when it fell prey to the pickets.

Driver Wasim was hit on his head by a stone thrown by pickets, the OC said. “He lost balance and the truck tumbled over. He was crushed under the vehicle.”

Including this casualty, a total of six people had died in the first two days of the opposition's 60-hour shutdown that began on Sunday.

Earlier on Sunday, five people were killed in Jessore, Pirojpur, Pabna, Bogra and Faridpur.

The casualties included three ruling Awami League men, one BNP activist and another of the Jamaat-e-Islami.
