Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2) has arrested three alleged criminals, including a teen gang member, in separate raids in the capital’s Mohammadpur area.
The arrestees are Mohammad Selim Ashrafi alias Chua Selim, a top drug dealer and alleged criminal from Geneva Camp; Joy, second-in-command of the Mahi teen gang; and Mohammad Ratan alias Boma Ratan, a listed criminal.
RAB-2 Commander Additional DIG Naimul Hasan disclosed the information at a press briefing at the battalion’s Basila office on Friday.
He said Chua Selim, accused in 36 cases and wanted in murder and drug-related cases, was arrested from Geneva Camp with a foreign-made pistol, two rounds of ammunition and 110 grams of heroin.
According to RAB, Chua Selim had long been involved in drug trafficking, mugging, murder, clashes and other criminal activities in and around Geneva Camp. He was previously arrested from Dhanmondi on January 8 last year.
On the same day, RAB-2 arrested Joy from Chand Udyan. He is accused in 10 cases involving robbery, mugging and drug-related offences.
RAB said Joy and other members of the Mahi gang had long been involved in mugging, extortion and assaults in Dhaka Udyan, Chand Udyan and Nabinagar, creating fear among residents. Local businesspeople, tenants and construction workers were allegedly regular targets of extortion.
Joy was also arrested by law enforcement agencies from Mohammadpur on April 24 this year.
In a separate operation, RAB-2 arrested listed criminal Mohammad Ratan alias Boma Ratan from Bijli Mohalla in Mohammadpur.
Ratan is accused in 20 cases involving robbery, dacoity, mugging and arms offences, RAB said.
According to the elite force, Boma Ratan had long led an armed gang involved in robbery, mugging and other criminal activities in Gaznabi Road, Basila and Geneva Camp.
He was previously detained with a sharp weapon from Gaznabi Road on February 19, 2022.
